Movement in Dhikr

The soul or the self in itself has a trace of being superior, so the one who purifies his soul attains that proximity to Allāh SWT, as for the other who answers the calls of the self, he fits the description

{ إن هم إلا كالأنعام بل هم أضل سبيلاً }

“they are like cattle, nay even more astray.”

One finds that when the ‘Abd recites the Qur’ān or makes Dhikr the soul inclines to it, extracts energy, gains the power needed and purity from it, upon this the body moves longing to the moment it once was addressed { ألست بربكم }; “am I not your lord,” all the souls replied { بلى } “indeed” this is the reason why the ‘Abd moves in remembrance longing for the sweetness in those words and for the proximity it once had.

(( Three great companions of Rasūl-Allāh Sayyed ‘Ali, Ja’far and Zaid bin Hārith as stated in the Hadīth had a little quarrel between themselves, regarding who was going to take care of the daughter of Sayyed Hamza the uncle of Rasūl-Allāh, upon this Rasūl-Allāh said to ‘Ali “oh ‘Ali you are from me and I am from you” hearing this he became excited and ( حجل ) ‘danced’, Rasūl-Allāh then told Ja’far  “you resemble me in character and appearance” he too then did what Ali did, and then Rasūl-Allāh said to Zaid “you are our brother and master” he also became excited and following ‘Ali and Ja’far in what they were doing, Rasūl-Allāh finalised it by saying “she should go with Sayyed Ja’far”….etc ))

The Great Al Katāni and ibn Hajar says that حجل in this beautiful Hadīth specifically means to stand on one leg and hop (in a specific manner).

Then the Mufti of Mecca Zaini Dahlan said in Sīrah al halabiyah that this action displayed here was because of the sweetness found in the words of Rasūl-Allāh صلى الله عليه وسلم, a display of joy.

Note: that Zaid was a slave and like a son to Rasūl-Allāh. Had Rasūl-Allāh objected, he would’ve done so when seeing his companions displaying their state of ecstasy.

Hadīth by Imām Ahmad in his musnad.

Abdullah bin Abās narrates (( on the day of Badr Rasūl-Allāh was in his tent calling to Allāh, “Oh Allāh! I request you to fulfill your promise and contract! Oh Allāh! If you wish You will not to be worshiped henceforth! ” upon this Abu Bakr held the hand of Rasūl-Allāh and said: that is enough oh messenger of Allāh you have appealed pressingly, whilst hopping and mentioning the Āyah:

{Their multitude will be put to flight, and they will show their backs}.

As in another Hadīth Sayyed ‘Umar says at this moment I’ve seen Rasūl-Allāh hopping in his armor while repeating this Āyah.

Hadīth in the Sahih of Imām Bukhari.

The focal point of this Hadīth points out that abundant dhikr without movement doesn’t call for someone to be characterised as crazy, unless attributed as such by those heedless people observing him move whilst in this state. As the Hadīth above states : “make or increase in the remembrance of Allāh until they call you crazy”

Hadīth in the Sahih of ibn Hibbān

4- ﻋﻦ ﺃﻧﺲ ﻗﺎﻝ: ﻛﺎﻧﺖ اﻟﺤﺒﺸﺔ ﻳﺰﻓﻨﻮﻥ ﺑﻴﻦ ﻳﺪﻱ ﺭﺳﻮﻝ اﻟﻠﻪ ﺻﻠﻰ اﻟﻠﻪ ﻋﻠﻴﻪ ﻭﺳﻠﻢ ﻭﻳﺮﻗﺼﻮﻥ ﻭﻳﻘﻮﻟﻮﻥ: ﻣﺤﻤﺪ ﻋﺒﺪ ﺻﺎﻟﺢ، ﻓﻘﺎﻝ ﺭﺳﻮﻝ اﻟﻠﻪ ﺻﻠﻰ اﻟﻠﻪ ﻋﻠﻴﻪ ﻭﺳﻠﻢ: «ﻣﺎ ﻳﻘﻮﻟﻮﻥ؟» ﻗﺎﻟﻮا: ﻳﻘﻮﻟﻮﻥ: ﻣﺤﻤﺪ ﻋﺒﺪ ﺻﺎﻟﺢ.

Two outstanding points derived from this Hadīth is that Rasūl-Allāh صلى الله عليه وسلم was standing for a long period watching and listening to the Ahbāsh (Abyssinians) singing and dancing in the mosque of Rasūl-Allāh, while allowing his wife to observe them over his shoulder means a lot. He also asked what they were saying, the reply was that they were chanting ” Muhammad is a pious slave ” and he let them be (Al Ghazāli also makes mention of this), that he صلى الله عليه وسلم did not just acknowledge but aslo spurred them in doing so, Qādi Iyād says this is probably the most strongest proof. (as mentioned in al taratibul idāriya by Al Katāni).

Hadīth in the Sahih ibn Hibbān.

These are some of the most outstanding proofs of movement let alone the Āyah where it’s stated to make dhikr in all postures as the Sahābah ra used to implement, by swaying and moving like the wind blowing the trees side to side as stated in the Hadīth above by Abu Arākata he says:  “I performed the Fajr prayer with Sayyedna ‘Ali, after turning to his right he stayed like that as if he was in distress until the sun rose till the time of ishrāq, he then performed two cycles of prayer after which he placed his hands up saying: ‘I swear by Allāh that ive seen the companions of Rasūl-Allāh and I don’t see any resemblance to them today, indeed they would rise in the morning pale, dusty and unkempt. Their eyes seemed like people who mourned, they’d spend their nights in prostration and standing in worship reciting the Qur’ān as a rest between the two, and in the mornings they would make remembrance of Allāh and sway like the wind blowing a tree on a windy day, and tears would pour till their clothes would moisten, I swear by Allāh today its like people are negligent.”

This Hadīth is by Ibn ‘Asakir and Abu Nu’aim.

Those who remember Allāh (always, and in prayers) standing, sitting, and lying down on their sides, and think deeply about the creation of the heavens and the earth, (saying): “Our Lord! You have not created (all) this without purpose, glory to You! (Exalted be You above all that they associate with You as partners). Give us salvation from the torment of the Fire.

Al Alūsi says in his rūh al ma’āni tafsīr on this Āyah: it’s narrated that ibn ‘Umar, Urwah bin Zubair with a group of Sahābah left on Eid day to the musalah making dhikr, then one of them mentioned the Āyah so they stood up and made dhikr implementing the Āyah ( a different posture ) and also gaining tabarruk of the Āyah.

Finally if we had to take a look into our past at the lives of our great predecessors the pillars of Ahl-Assunnah, you’d find hundreds of stories mentioning their association with active dhikr.
The day will come when mouths will be shut and our limbs will answer for what it has harvested in its life.

And they will say oh my lord we have praised You with every limb of this body.

May Allāh grant us the understanding and an openminded approach to this vast and beautiful Dīn so that we may attain proximity to Him and His most beloved

Allāhu a’lam.

True Direction

If a good befalls you, it grieves them, but if some evil overtakes you, they rejoice at it. But if you remain patient and become Al-Muttaqun (the pious – see V. 2:2), not the least harm will their cunning do to you. Surely, Allah surrounds all that they do.
